One thing I haven't mentioned on this here blog before is that R has a 10-year-old son. His son happens to have the same name, so from now on R will be referred to as "R2" and his son will be "R3" (and just to confuse you even more, R2's dad is "R1"...).
Anyway, this weekend we decided to pack up our kids (R3 and Athena..ha!) and drive down to the southern part of the state to go hiking and camping. We woke up early Saturday morning and hit the road so we could make sure we were able to get a camping spot, since we couldn't reserve them in advance. Athena was excited she got to go on a trip with us this time!
We got to the campgrounds mid-morning and set up camp.
R2 made a quick trip into town to pick up some essentials, and then we ate a quick lunch before hitting the hiking trails. The first trail we went on was a 12-mile hike, but we only did a portion of it before turning around and heading back to camp.
By this time, though, we were exhausted so we crashed in the tent to get out of the chilly wind, and we all ended up falling asleep for a bit. When we woke up from our naps, we decided we were probably going to need some more fire wood for the night, so we hopped in the car to get some more fire wood and then ended up driving around to find some other hiking trails to explore.
We found a few other trails that were much shorter but more rugged. There were a lot of interesting rock formations that we climbed over, so we got a pretty good work out.
It didn't take long before our stomachs were all growling, so we decided to head back to the campgrounds so we could get our fire going before it got dark and make supper. As it turns out, though, the fire wood we bought was damp and did nothing but smolder. After about an hour or so of messing with it and even soaking it in lighter fluid that a fellow camper brought over (I think he felt sorry for us), R2 decided to just go walk through the woods to find some new logs to burn. R2 and R3 finally got the fire going, so we were able to grill up some burgers for supper followed by some s'mores. I can't ever have a campfire without making s'mores!!
Later in the night, we climbed back into the tent and played a few rounds of Three Thirteen before snuggling up in our warm sleeping bags and calling it a night.
The next morning, we slept in a bit and then took Athena on a walk around the campgrounds before having breakfast and packing everything up.
We stopped along the way home to meet R2's parents for lunch and then finished the long drive home. Athena enjoyed all the hiking and hunting for woodland creatures, but I think she was more than ready to be back in my nice warm bed. When we got home, we laid down for a nap and she didn't move for 3 hours!
Needless to say, it was a fun but exhausting weekend :-)
